I’ve just made my biggest DT trades for the season in an attempt to win one for the everyman. Like most of us my DT scores are always middle of the road. An unhealthy bias toward the Dockers and an unwillingness to recruit muppets like Didak and Mitchell leaves me competitive but never really a shot at the title.

That was until a few weeks ago when I decided that the random guy kicking our asses at the top of the table wasn’t cool. Who is he anyway? Scoring 2100 plus from the start of the year. Never having a bad week. Never affected by injuries. Yet somehow never online like the rest of us.

So I’ve started playing hard. Forgetting bias. Downgrading rookies. Steadily making enough dollars to fill out a midfield of Ablett, Bartel, Dal Santo, Goodes & Judd.

This week I’m going after those DT freaks that make up the top 1000 of the country. The faceless robots none of us have ever met. The ones who make our best scores look trivial.

Sure next week I might be screwed with no trades left, looking at a paltry 1700. But not this week. This week I’m hunting!

I totally almost crashed into David Mundy. He just pulled out right in front of me as I was heading past Freo oval to work. After an initial burst of road rage it was actually pretty funny.

I’m approaching the lights when a sedan that’s been waiting to exit the ground decides it has waited long enough and just shoots out in front of me. Trouble is the lights have changed and the other lane (the one he’s trying to get into), is now full. So he stops sideways right in front of me. Startled I brake and yell ‘What are you doing…(pause) David Mundy?!’

It was pretty hard to be mad. Plus I couldn’t help but think that David Mundy in previous years may have kept waiting until it was totally clear before exiting. Not in 2010 though! He just bursts right through, and if he gets stuck, I’m pretty sure Stephen Hill wont be far away to pick up a handball!

Too many 6 day breaks. Can’t play without McPharlin and Mundy. Choking on the big stage. The 6 and 1 start was flattering…

You can take your pick of these. Or you can consider a fact that all the media (no doubt led again by Craig Hutchison) seem to have forgotten. That being we have a team full of kids!

People should give the boys a break and remember how much they’ve already exceeded all expectations. While at the same time saving middle earth.

The 11 players highlighted in bold are those which were picked up in either the rookie or pre-season draft. It’s half our side! Surely some kind or record.

B: Jay van Berlo, Chris Tarrant, Adam McPhee
HB: Greg Broughton, Luke McPharlin, Roger Hayden
C: Matthew de Boer, David Mundy, Stephen Hill
HF: Michael Johnson, Matthew Pavlich, Hayden Ballantyne
F: Nat Fyfe, Chris Mayne, Anthony Morabito
Foll: Aaron Sandilands, Michael Barlow, Paul Duffield
I/C: Alex Silvagni, Clancee Pearce, Ryan Crowley, Paul Hasleby

While we have had great success with our rookies, our drafting of youth through the national draft has been appalling. Of the junior players selected between 2001 and 2006 – the Connolly / Schwab era – only one player, David Mundy, played on the weekend. I’m aware that our proclivity to select experience over youth is old news, but I still found this staggering. For this reason, I am more than happy to see Harvey’s contract extended for another couple of years.

Thank god we’re finally on the right track!

I guess you could do a lot worse. Daryl Somers (Geelong), Peter Costello (Essendon), Lleyton Hewitt (Adelaide), David Koch (Port). Those are some dodgy number one ticket holders.

Despite continual questions over their dress sense, local boys Eskimo Joe seem like a pretty decent fit for FFC in 2010. But they’ll have to deal with some initial skepticism from fans, or at least the unforgiving folk at TAAF, given their previous ties to West Coast.

We were pretty bitter when their song From the Sea graced an Eagles membership campaign a few years back. I mean, if they had to sell West Coast a song surely the old classic Sweater would have been more suitable. Picture a long line of blonde, slightly dense looking WC players. Each wearing that god awful blue and yellow. Then we hear the chorus ‘I could never, wear that sweater. I could never, wear that sweater’. It could have been beautiful!

But no. It was From the Sea. And it was Benny Cousins streaming toward goal. That’s some tough shit to forget.

But we will try Eskimo Joe. Just know your responsibility here. You represent us! Nervous much?
